SKYY Vodka
I like this! It is all primary colors and very simple. The simplicity of the ad along with the colors makes the SKYY vodka bottle stand out.

Graphic Advertisment

How would you feel if you were driving down the road with your kids and you saw a billboard of this? Advertisers are really trying to stand out and I think it is working.
Dont talk while she drives
I happen to love and agree with this controversial advertisement. It is very graphic and to the point. Anti-talking on a cell phone while driving kicked ass with this one!

Web Design
Web designers are graphic designers that specialize in
creating a user friendly website that appeal to the public. Web design
is an art mixed with the technology and know how of actually creating
the websites infrastructure. When going to a website, one may not notice
all the little details that go into it such as font, font size, font
color, background color/image, basic layout etc. A lot of time and
effort goes into each aspect of the aesthetics in website design to make
it as visually pleasing as possible.
In today's society it is not uncommon for most businesses to have a website. So, having the skills to be able to design and maintain a website could set you apart from a competitor in the job hunt. If your job title is not a "web designer" or it is not in your job description it is a good way to help out small businesses in your area while making some money on the side.
There are many different types of website design types such as Flash, HTML, building business websites, website redesign, custom web design, corporate web design, and rich internet applications. Each of these are different in their own ways and are used in different, specific ways depending on what your overall objective is.

What is your brand visually?
I don't need to tell you what brand this is, you already know just by looking at it. If you notice, this is a very simple design they chose for their logo. The simpler the logo, the easier it is to remember. But even as simple as the logo is, they still find a way to depict them in an interesting and visually pleasing way. Apple's logo is the outline of a very unrealistic apple. They have taken the outline, added a light blue hue fading from dark at the top to light at the bottom, then added a shine towards the top that gives is a smooth, glossy look. So, they transformed a simple unrealistic apple outline and made it look technological and overall visually captivating. This is innovation at its finest and we haven't even looked at anything but the logo. It gives the consumer a sense of what the company is all about without even saying a word.
My point is this: as a company, you really need to put a lot of thought into your logo design. Even as simple as some appear, in most cases they have a lot of thought about the design behind them. A logo is not just a picture you choose for your company, it is a picture that tells a story about your company.

Why not?

The Cop Car Analogy
When turning onto a street in which somebody has been pulled over it is almost impossible not to notice the flashing lights on the top of the cop car. This is because the flashing bright lights just stand out in such a way they draw so much attention. The same is true with graphics. Have you ever seen some type of advertisement or piece of art that just stood out so much that you just couldn't help but look at more, even for just a few more seconds? Those few seconds are the deciding factor whether or not you are going to either remember or forget about it. As a graphic designer, being able to create something that noticeable that it not only is very memorable but also accomplishes your objective can be a powerful thing.
Art or Marketing?
Graphic design is not just putting your face on Sylvester Stallone's body or making it look like your standing on the moon. Graphic design comes in many different forms.
A lot of people use graphic design as a way to express themselves like a painter would on a canvas. The only difference is the computer screen is the graphic designers canvas. It can be used a a medium in which emotions are expressed.
Although a lot of times there is a specific goal (other than expressing emotion) trying to be reached in a graphic designers agenda. Most advertisements are created by marketers and designed by graphic designers. All the billboards, posters, ads in magazines and newspapers were all created by a marketer and designed by a graphic designer. Generally these are meant to boost sales and revenue or the exact opposite to decrease sales and revenues (anti smoking ads).
The question "is graphic design art or marketing?" there really isn't an easy answer. I'll just leave it for you to decide.

UG tree
This is a picture I made on Adobe Photoshop cs5. If you look close you can see the letters "UG" hidden in the branches.
Why did I make this? well the answer is simple. I am new to Photoshop but I am very interested in learning as much as I can. The creation of this was not for school or work. You wont see it on a billboard or anything like that. This was strictly for my own learning and fun.
I was playing around with the "puppet warp" feature which allows you to bend and warp any of the parts of the image you would like to. It is actually a very interesting feature because if you are careful you can bend things in such a way that the viewer would not even be able to tell you did anything at all, and with this type of thing that is usually the goal. To bring a slight emphasis to the "UG" I gave everything around it a slight motion blur. I also took out some branches in the center of the letters to also bring emphasis to the letters. These were subtle effects but I think they really paid off in the end.
Below is the actual image to give you perspective on what I actually did to the image.
